Early childhood development is an amazing subject. The way babies grow from a small ball of cells into fully functioning human beings boggles the brains of most people. There is so much going on beneath the surface of infancy! Cuteness is only a small part of being a baby! They each have individual needs and wants that parents need to take care of to make sure that development occurs the way it should. You probably have no idea how complex being a baby can be. Being a parent is easier if you understand what is going on as your child grows from baby to small kid to teenager and onward.

Even while a baby is in the womb he or she is sensitive to light. Your eyes are very intricate organs that consist of millions of fibers and nerve endings. In order to work the right way your eye muscles need to have extremely precise coordination. Babies usually have working eyes by the end of the first trimester or very beginning of the second trimester. By the time your baby has spent six months growing in your womb, he or she will already be sensitive to light. A great piece of eye trivia: your baby’s eyes might change color a few months after she is born-Caucasian babies are born with blue eyes and it takes a few months for the eyes to change to their permanent color. If you are Caucasian your baby’s eyes will probably be blue and then change later. So do what you can not to let your heart get set on having a blue eyed child. Your baby might have different colored eyes before too long! Your baby will know how to swim when she is born (as well as how to hold her breath). The instinct fades rapidly. Because babies are born knowing these things, many people believe that women should have water births. Because the baby spends the first few months of their lives basically swimming inside their mothers’ wombs, experts believe that giving birth in water helps to ease the transition. “Traditional” birthing in a hospital room is believed to be one of the reasons that babies have such a hard time adjusting to life outside of mom: the harsh transition is too traumatic.

It is easier for babies to learn how to communicate with their parents physically than it is for them to learn how to do so verbally. This is just one of the reasons that the “baby signs” program is so popular. Babies are taught how to ask for things like food and a new diaper which makes it easier for them to get what they want from their parents. Communication skills of adults who were taught physical communication style before verbal communication style are better than those who were simply taught how to talk as young kids.

There are plenty of fun and obscure facts about babies that you can learn. Everybody knows that babies grow up at an alarming rate. Do you know exactly how development occurs? Has anybody told you just how many changes occur between when your baby is conceived and when he or she has a baby of his or her own? There is no end to the number of interesting facts you can learn about babies-this article is a good example of that!
